Discovery

Can machines and people find this property at all? Crawl demand, indexation, query surface, and the speed at which new content is reached.

Discovery is the first measurable thing a property produces, and it produces it long before search reporting has anything to say. These signals come mostly from raw server request logs, which is why they are available within days of launch rather than weeks.

The distinction that matters here: discovery is not visibility and it is certainly not traffic. A property can be crawled thoroughly and remain entirely absent from search results, and reading that state as failure is the most common misdiagnosis in a new property's first quarter.

Signals (5)

Crawl Request Volume

Total classified crawler requests reaching the property over a period, split by vendor and stated purpose.

Measured. Available from launch.

Crawl Coverage by Section

Which parts of the property crawlers actually request, and which they never touch.

Measured. Needs a published URL inventory to join against, which the sitemap provides.

Time to First Fetch

How long after publishing before a classified crawler requests a new URL.

Measured, and one of the more interesting things to watch on a brand new domain.

Query Surface Growth

The count of distinct queries the property receives any impressions for, and its trend.

Measured, once Search Console has data for the property. Zero until then.

Indexable Surface

The share of published URLs that are actually eligible to be indexed and reachable without errors.

Measured. Checked at build time and repeatable at any point.
