Indexable Surface
The unglamorous floor under every other discovery signal. A property cannot be discovered on URLs that return errors, redirect in loops, or exclude themselves.
- Measures
- Published URLs returning a successful status, carrying a self-referencing canonical, not excluded by robots directives, and present in the sitemap.
- Data Source
- Site crawl plus the published record inventory, checked against server responses.
- Indicates
- Whether the property's own configuration is standing in the way before anything external is considered.
- What Moves It
- Fixing broken internal links, keeping the sitemap generated from content rather than maintained by hand, and checking that nothing advertised as public is blocked.
- Does Not Prove
- That eligible pages will be indexed. Eligibility is permission, not outcome.
- Status
- Measured. Checked at build time and repeatable at any point.
The specific contradiction worth checking on any property: does anything the site advertises as a public machine-readable endpoint get blocked by robots.txt or refused by the server? It is a common failure and completely silent.
