Query Surface Growth
The first search-side signal to move on a new property. Positions are poor, clicks are zero, and the surface expands anyway.
- Measures
- Distinct queries with at least one impression in the period, and the change over time.
- Data Source
- Google Search Console query data.
- Indicates
- How much of a subject a search engine currently considers this property potentially relevant to.
- What Moves It
- Published coverage of a subject, internal structure that makes topics distinguishable, and time.
- Does Not Prove
- Relevance quality. Surface can expand into queries the property has no business appearing for, which is a classification problem rather than progress.
- Status
- Measured, once Search Console has data for the property. Zero until then.
Read this one alongside the intent profile rather than alone. Surface growth into definitional queries and surface growth into decision queries are the same number and completely different news.
