Query Surface
Also known as: Query coverage, Keyword surface
The number of distinct queries a property appears for at all, regardless of position. An early discovery signal that moves before clicks do.
Query surface is the count of distinct queries a property receives any impressions for. It answers a different question from rankings or traffic: how much of a subject has a search engine decided this property is potentially relevant to?
On a new property, query surface is usually the first search signal to move. Positions are poor, clicks are zero, and the surface expands anyway as more of the site becomes eligible to appear for something.
A growing query surface is not automatically good. Expansion into queries with no relevance to what the property is for indicates a classification problem, not progress. The useful version of this metric is surface growth within the subject you chose, which requires actually reading the queries rather than counting them.
